The match was Hanley’s first competitive hit out since he was granted compassionate leave to go home to Ireland to be with his brother Tommy who was dying of cancer.

His brother Cian, who plays for the Brisbane Lions, was also granted leave.

Tommy Hanley passed away aged 16 in late March.

Gold Coast’s reserves won their match against Aspley, 13.9 (87) to 10.13 (73).
