Port Adelaide will go to the tribunal tonight to contest Robbie Gray's one-match ban.

Gray was suspended on Monday for rough conduct after a bump on West Coast's Jeremy McGovern.

The Port Adelaide star was ruled to have engaged in high and careless contact with medium impact, equalling a one-match ban, with the 29-year-old is set to miss the round one clash against Fremantle.

Port Adelaide will spend $10,000 on the tribunal challenge, a figure only returned to the club if the appeal is successful.

"His eyes moved from the ball to McGovern and if he was genuinely contesting the ball, I would like to see his hands down contesting the ball rather than shaping to bump," match review officer Michael Christian said yesterday.

"I think he had other alternatives rather than shaping to bump and bumping… the option was there to genuinely contest the ball and he elected not to.

"And if you make contact with the head in a careless manner, then that is when there may well be a penalty forthcoming."
