Geelong play Essendon in the third annual Country Game at the MCG today.
And while the recent matches haven’t necessarily been classics, this season marks 25 years since one of the greatest of all home and away games between the two sides.
The Cats took on the Bombers at the MCG in round 6, 1993, with enigmatic superstar Gary Ablett at the peak of his powers at one end and Essendon power forward-cum-ruckman Paul Salmon dominant at the other.
Ablett ended up with 14.7; Salmon booted 10.6, and the Bombers ran out 23.18 (156) to 19.18 (132) winners.
Check out the highlights here — you can even see Ablett playing on a very young James Hird:
Let’s hope today’s game gets close to that!
