Former Hawthorn skipper Richie Vandenberg is returning to the club.

The 41-year-old will take up the position as chairman of the football subcommittee, with ex-AFL umpire Tim Shearer also joining the board.

It comes after the resignations of former players Andy Gowers and Bruce Stevenson.

The position has previously been held by club legends such as Jason Dunstall, who held the position during Jeff Kennett's first term as president.

In a letter to members, Kennett explained Vandenberg will bring plenty of expertise.

"Richie is a very astute follower of the game and has been well trained in the challenges facing the whole football department," Kennett wrote.

"He has great personal values and is a very successful businessman. So, while chair of the football subcommittee he also brings other important skills to the table."

Vandenberg played 145 games for the Hawks, captaining them from 2005 to 2007.
