Richmond president Peggy O'Neal has backed Dustin Martin to stay at the Tigers beyond 2017.

Martin's contract expires at the end of 2017, at which point he will become a restricted free agent.

The 25-year-old has already been surrounded by contract speculation, once touring the GWS facilities as he courted a contract offer from then.

But, according to O'Neal, those days are over.

"We have every expectation that he will (stay), and have no indication that he is anything but happy at Richmond," O’Neal told News Corp.

The president said Martin has 'grown up a lot' over the last few years.

"We have respect for one another but he is not someone I catch up with regularly. We don’t hang around together,” she said.

It was reported in December by the Herald Sun Martin would take his time to decide on his future.

Close friend and former Magpie Dane Swan has previously tipped Martin to remain a Tiger.

"My personal opinion is I think he'll stay at Richmond, but then again, how do you know?" he told Fairfax Media in October.

"In 12 months Richmond might finish on the bottom, and he might go 'I'm not hanging around here to finish on the bottom' or they might finish seventh, win a final and he might go 'let's do a five year deal.'"
