Richmond are favourites to win the AFL grand final, but they won’t be doing the VFL double this year after bombing out in straight sets at the hands of Essendon — who finished eighth.

The Tigers finished top of the table at the end of the home and away season, but were knocked off 11.14 (80) to 8.7 (55) by Williamstown in the qualifying final then crashed out in a remarkable finish against Essendon.

The game was a tight arm-wrestle that saw several lead changes, and was decided by a remarkable two-bounce run off the half back flank by Bomber Nick Hind that ended in a set shot for James Stewart.

Stewart slotted the goal and the Bombers won 10.9 (69) to 9.10 (64).

Essendon finished eighth on the ladder after the regular season, but knocked off Collingwood in week one to set up the clash with Richmond.

They now move on to a preliminary final against Casey next Sunday for a chance at a fairytale spot in the grand final.
