Richmond's AFL premiership defence will start without Bachar Houli and Dion Prestia, who have been ruled out of their opening round clash with Carlton on Thursday night.

Houli (calf) and Prestia (hamstring) have lost their race against time to prove their fitness for the MCG match, according to Tigers coach Damien Hardwick.

Jayden Short and Shai Bolton are likely to come in for the grand final pair with the team to be named later on Wednesday.

Premiership stars Daniel Rioli (foot) and Nathan Broad (suspension) had already been ruled out of the round one clash.
