Richmond premiership backman David Astbury is battling illness ahead of Friday night's preliminary final with the Tigers to make a late call on whether he plays.

Astbury was sent home from training on Thursday and effectively quarantined from his teammates after suffering flu-like symptoms.

The Tigers are hopeful Astbury will be available to line up against Collingwood at the MCG but are unlikely to make a final call until 5pm on Friday.

First-year defender Ryan Garthwaite has been named as an emergency and looms as a likely replacement should Astbury be unable to play.

Garthwaite has played two games this season, the most recent against Essendon in round 22.

Brandon Ellis, Sam Lloyd and Ivan Soldo are the other emergencies.
