Richmond forward Jason Castagna became the first player to win a premiership wearing No.46 since Hawthorn’s Chris Mew in 1983.

Castagna had 10 disposals, laid three tackles and booted a goal as Richmond ended their 37-year premiership drought with a 48-point thumping of Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday.

It was just the 21-year-old’s 30th game. The former rookie headed into season 2017 with only five games to his credit but he didn’t miss a game this year and ended it with a premiership medal.

Mew, who debuted in 1980, wore No.46 in his first four seasons before permanently changing to No.2 in 1984.

The former Hawks defender ended up winning five flags. If Castagna ends up with a strike rate anywhere near that, he will be a very happy man.
