Richmond superstar Dustin Martin is still eligible to win this year's Brownlow Medal after avoiding a suspension for making contact with an umpire.

Martin was fined $1500 for making, what match review officer Michael Christian deemed to be, 'careless contact' with umpire Jacob Mollison.

Moments after giving away a free kick to Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield late in the third quarter of the Tigers’ 18-point win over the Cats at the MCG for pushing him in the back, Martin tried to explain to Mollison that he placed his forearm, rather than his hands, in Dangerfield’s back.

However, in doing so, Martin forcefully placed his forearm against Mollison while attempting to demonstrate his action.

Gold Coast co-captain Steven May also avoided a suspension for a similar action in round eight but Geelong forward Tom Hawkins and Carlton midfielder Ed Curnow both received one-game bans last month for making intentional contact with an umpire.

Martin is the second favourite for the Brownlow Medal and his hopes of becoming the first back-to-back winner of the prestigious award since St Kilda champion Robert Harvey in 1997-98 are still alive.

Hawthorn ball magnet Tom Mitchell is the outright favourite.
