Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has confirmed that the club has offered James Hird a role on the club’s coaching staff.

Speaking on Channel 7, Lyon said that getting Hird to the Dockers is an “absolute priority”.

“It’s great for us because it’ll help us win and I think it’s a nice little entree that could lead to greater and better things for James again,” Lyon said.

Hird’s famously presented last year’s Norm Smith Medal to Dustin Martin, his first involvement with the AFL since he was sacked as Essendon coach in 2015.

The league has said they wouldn’t stand in the way of the appointment.

A position opened at the Freo with the move of Stephen Lennie, the opposition analyst and pro scout to St Kilda.

Hird would be the part-time opposition analyst based in Melbourne.
