Everyone was transfixed by David Mundy’s match winning goal against Richmond at the MCG today — except Fremantle coach Ross Lyon.

The Tigers had managed to squeeze ahead in the last minute thanks to a Brandon Ellis snap, but then they flubbed defending the centre square stoppage which allowed Lachie Neale to burst free and put the ball on Mundy’s chest.

As the ex-skipper lined up for ultimately proved to be the winner, Lyon decided he’d seen enough and jumped on the lift to go downstairs.

“I was halfway to the Union Club Hotel in Fitzroy and was on my second pot,” Lyon joked to Fox Sports.

“I heard a bit of roar, I got to the bottom of the lift and got out and I looked up to the TV… the siren had gone and he (David Mundy) is taking deep breaths.

“I thought he must be 55 out but then I look and he’s 30 metres out on a slight angle and I thought ‘he’s the best kick in the club’.”

As history will attest, Lyon’s confidence was well placed and the Dockers ran out 10.12 (72) to 10.10 (70) winners.
