Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says he can "guarantee" his future at the Dockers beyond 2017 even if the Dockers perform as poorly this season.

The Dockers slumped from a grand final in 2014 and a minor premiership in 2015 to just four wins in 2016.

Lyon expects them to bounce back this season and aims "to play finals", but has backed the club to be stable even if the result don't go their way again.

"That's reality," he said in a Herald Sun interview.

"Clearly for us, we don’t want another four-win season. But if we do, we’ll be stable. I can guarantee you I will be coaching the year after."

Lyon is contracted until the end of 2020.

He chuckled at suggestions the club wouldn't be so stable after two more poor seasons in a row.

"I’d probably be under a little bit of pressure," he laughed.

He said last year was the beginning of a list transition, but says the Dockers still "aim to play finals" this year regardless.

"All of a sudden, expectation disappeared and it was a unique experience for me because I’ve never really coached without an expectation," he said.

"But, you know, we are a really stable club. We committed to a plan, we’re aiming high this year, but we certainly started a four-year commitment of transitioning."
