A round one blockbuster between Collingwood and Melbourne is set to be turned down by the AFL, according to Triple M's Jay Clark.

Clarky wrote in the Herald Sun that the Pies and Dees had pitched for a Friday night clash on round one, to help kick the season off.

But his report says the AFL is set to turn it down, holding other ideas for the two clubs to kick off their season.

The two clubs will already have a Queen's Birthday clash in their fixture, and there is a chance they could play weeks before that.

The Dees are likely to feature on Anzac Day eve, which falls on a Tuesday next year, and the Pies locked in for Anzac Day on a Wednesday.

It means the Pies will most likely play the Dees or the Tigers on the following Sunday to minimise the impact of each team's short break.

The two clubs haven't opened a season since 1984, when the two clubs faced off at Victoria Park.
