Delisted North Melbourne midfielder Sam Gibson doesn’t agree with the decision by the Roos to let him go, but admits he saw the “writing on the wall” late in the year.

The 31-year-old was cut by North after 130 consecutive games last Friday, and despite a sixth-placed finish in the best and fairest.

He said there were mixed feelings about the news.

“I guess it was and it wasn’t (a surprise),” he told AFL Trade Radio.

“It’s an industry driven by success, and we didn’t have the sort of success we needed to have this year, unfortunately. With that comes some pretty hard decisions, and I guess in one way you have to admire the club’s conviction in making those decisions.

“But it’s not really a decision I particularly agree with, to be honest.”

He said the longer the season went on, the more of a feeling he had about being cut.

“You tend to have a bit of intuition about these sort of things, and the longer it dragged out, the more you probably see the writing on the wall,” he said.

“When I actually had that conversation with Brad (Scott) a couple of days ago it wasn’t a complete shock, but that being said, I’m a pretty rational person, it can still be hard to fathom you can be in the best 22 for 130 weeks, finish sixth in the best and fairest and not have a contract for next year.

“That’s been tough, but that’s just the nature of the industry, I guess.”

Gibson said he’ll move anywhere with his wife and his young son to have another crack, confident that he could play for another “three or four years”.

“I’d happily go anywhere. I’m still pretty driven to succeed,” he said.
