Former Hawthorn and West Coast superstar Sam Mitchell has told Triple M’s Rush Hour that he had to organise his own Brownlow Medal function with Richmond captain Trent Cotchin.

After former Essendon skipper Jobe Watson was stripped of the 2012 Brownlow in November 2016, the AFL Commission resolved that Mitchell and Cotchin were the rightful winners as they had finished the count in equal second spot.

The pair were presented with their medals at a function that took place in December 2016 which, as it turns out, was largely put together by the recipients.

“I got the phone call saying, ‘Congrats, you’re a Brownlow Medallist’,” Mitchell said.

“Then the next phone call was, ‘You need to organise a function for it, can you call ‘Cotch’ and sort that out?’

“I only knew him from playing against him and trying to knock his block off most of the time and him trying to do the same to me.

“And then we got on the phone and caught up and decided how we were going to organise our own Brownlow Medal function that you knew you were going to win.

“Basically they (AFL) gave us a date that it had to be, and they said, ‘Now you decide how many people do you want to go. Do you want 30 people? 50 people? 200 people? ... We’ll do our best to accommodate you’.”
