Notorious Footy Show larrikin Sam Newman has said he will retire from TV if the show doesn’t come back in 2019.

The 72-year-old made the announcement off the top of tonight’s episode of the show.

“I will not be continuing,” Newman said, whilst holding back tears.

“It’s appropriate, it’s opportune that I end my association with this show and the network on the off-chance that this is the final show that we do.

“Next week we look forward to a great Grand Final show... I really appreciate the fact that you’ve taken the time to tune in, sometimes in big numbers, sometimes in lesser numbers.

“You’ve got to experience the lows in life to experience the highs. I am one of those people.

“And so, this is probably it for me as an in-house Footy Show contributor, and next week will probably be it for me as a Grand Final Footy Show participant as well.

“I want to thank you very much for putting up with me or enjoying me.

“I probably marginalised most people, probably that’s a bonus, probably it’s not.”

Newman also addressed the criticism he’s copped over the journey in the lengthy monologue, which you can watch here:
