Carlton has confirmed that Carlton captain Brianna Davey has ruptured her ACL.

Davey went down in serious pain in a reasonably innocuous incident in the match against GWS last night and had to be stretchered off.

Players from both sides were visibly distraught watching Davey get taken off the field.

Davey had 16 touches — 13 of them kicks — and six tackles before her injury, and was instrumental in a 3.12 (30) to 1.3 (9) win.

“Bri is an incredibly tough competitor so when we saw her go down in pain late in that fourth quarter on Friday night, we knew it could be serious,” Carlton Head of Football Andrew McKay told the club’s website.

“She is clearly a star contributor in our backline, but her absence will now be an opportunity for our other AFLW defenders to step up on-field.

“While we are incredibly disappointed for her, the Club will fully support Brianna in her rehabilitation process and we look forward to seeing her back out on the field in the navy blue for the start of the AFLW season next year.”
