Scott Pendlebury has detailed what St Kilda did wrong in the dying moments of their loss to Port Adelaide, saying they failed to pressure Robbie Gray and protect the outside of the stoppage.

Gray kicked a goal from a stoppage outside 50 with seven seconds left to snatch a two-point win.

Pendlebury suggested on the Sunday Rub it should never have happened, because St Kilda's structures fell apart after the centre bounce.

"(The play) went into a bit of transition and it lost all structure. It went into a forward line that was one on one again," he said on Triple M

"The Robbie Gray goal, almost sitting at home on the couch watching it, you thought 'this is going to happen here, Robbie Gray'.

"He had a clean run at the stoppage, he's one of the best stoppage players of the game in the last 10 years."

He highlighted Seb Ross as the midfielder that let him slip.

"There was no body pressure on him at all, so that was the first mistake. Seb Ross was playing on him at the time, there was no body pressure on Robbie Gray at all," he said.

"Then to get through with the ball and then actually exit the stoppage and run and kick a goal himself, there was no protection on the out layer.

"They'll be looking at all these things. They'll see that stoppage at least 20 times."
