Scott Selwood will be in a race against time to be fit for round one, with the midfielder undergoing ankle surgery.

Selwood underwent an arthroscopy on Monday night after experiencing pain and stiffness in his right ankle over the past month.

The Cats had him go under the knife believing it would be the best approach, according to Geelong's general manager of football Simon Lloyd

“The decision for surgery was made as the club’s medical staff believe it will give Scott the best chance of missing minimal football going forward,” Lloyd told the club's website.

“Scott will now begin a rehab program with his recovery expected to take approximately six to eight weeks.”

Selwood has had a history of ankle issues, with his first pre-season at Geelong in 2016 delayed due to surgery.

He first injured his ankle midway through 2014 while playing for West Coast.

The 27-year-old has played 44 of a possible 92 games over the past four years.
