Shane Mumford has announced his retirement.

The GWS ruckman confirmed he will call it quits on Friday, ending his AFL career after 172 games.

The 31-year-old will hang up the boots after a series of chronic injuries, namely ankle and knee problems, held him back in 2017.

He will retire despite having a year left on his current contract.

Mumford missed a week with his ankle during the season before being ruled out of GWS's last two finals with a fractured foot, playing his last game in the qualifying final loss to Adelaide.

He played 21 games for Geelong in 2008 and 2009 before switching to Sydney for more opportunity, winning a premiership in 2012.

He played 79 games for the Swans before being traded to cross-town rivals GWS in the 2013 trade period, where he played 72 more games across four seasons.

His decision had been anticipated, with list manager Craig Cameron conceding he could call it quits.

"There's a good chance that he might finish up," he said.

"His body's taken a fair whack across the journey."
