North Melbourne premiership star Shannon Grant is reportedly facing assault charges.

Triple M's Hot Breakfast and Channel 7 football reporter Tom Browne reported that Grant will face court on February 21 following an allegedly violent assault on a woman.

Police issued a statement on Tuesday confirming a 40-year-old Highett man had been charged with 18 offences, including assault and criminal damage.

"A 40-year-old Highett man has been charged with 18 offences, including assault and criminal damage, following an alleged incident in Highett in December 2017," they said.

"He has been bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on 21 February."

Grant stepped down as coach of St Kevin's in the VAFA two days ago, after spending just one year in the role.

He took the club to their first premiership in the top division last year before stepping down.

“The president of the St Kevin’s Old Boys Football Club, Michael Doble, has confirmed that senior coach, Shannon Grant, has regretfully resigned for personal reasons,” the club said in a statement.

Grant played 58 games for Sydney before moving to North Melbourne, playing a further 243 games and kicking 323 goals.

The 40-year-old won the Norm Smith Medal in North Melbourne's 1999 premiership, as well as winning one best and fairest in 2001 and making the All-Australian team in 2005.
