Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne admits there was some shock upon hearing teammate Luke Hodge would continue his AFL career elsewhere, but is “really happy and excited” for him.

Hodge flipped on his retirement after discussions with Brisbane coach Chris Fagan, signing a two-year deal to play for the Lions.

Burgoyne told Triple M’s Roo & Ditts there was some initial surprise.

“It was a strange one, it came as a bit of a shock to everyone,” he said.

“Everyone was preparing for him to retire - we did a little Luke Hodge retirement circuit towards the end of the year, and ‘Fages’ has conned him up to go up there!”

But Burgoyne was pleased for his mate extending his career, noting that you’re “forever retired”.

“But I’m really happy and excited for him. I think you’re forever retired,” he said.

“If you can go up there and play for two years and help develop their younger guys - he’s got a passion for mentoring and coaching as well. We’ve seen over the last couple of years him take that to the next level on field.

“Brisbane have a very young list, and ‘Fages' being at Hawthorn for a number of years knows exactly what he wants from Hodgey and what Hodgey can provide, so it’s going to be an exciting adventure for him and his young family as well to live up there in the sun for two years.

“I couldn't be more happy for him. I think it’s great, because like I said before, you’re going to be forever retired."
