Shaun Higgins has been ruled out of North Melbourne's clash after going under the knife.

Higgins has had an arthroscope on his right knee after pulling up sore from Sunday's game against West Coast.

North Melbourne head of football Cameron Joyce said it was a very minor procedure.

"Post game on the weekend he just pulled up a bit sore in his right knee," he told Fox Sports.

"(It was a) very minor surgery which we did last night."

Joyce said the surgery went well, and was important to ensure Higgins didn't have to manage it for the rest of the year.

"We're hoping we will just miss this week and be available for the Bulldogs game," he said.

"Rather than trying to nurse him through the remainder of the season, we thought let's get it done now and make sure it's freed up, ready to go for the last three games."
