Shaun McKernan has signed a new two-year contract with Essendon, tying him to the Bombers until the end of 2020 at least.

McKernan played the best footy of his career after he broke into the side in round eight, playing 10 games and booting 16 goals, including bags of four against Geelong and North Melbourne, before a serious hamstring injury ended his season prematurely.

“I’m thrilled to sign on with the Bombers. We are building towards something special and I am excited to be a part of it,” the 28-year-old said.

“I felt this year I was able to contribute strongly to the side and I’m looking forward to continuing that over the next two years.

“Over the pre-season I want to build on my game and not rely solely on my marking but also offer defensive pressure in the forward line.

“I am eager to get back on the track and work hard over the off-season, and see what we can achieve as a team in 2019 and beyond.”

The former Adelaide forward has played 28 of his 62 career games with the Bombers and has kicked a career total of 50 goals.
