Simon Black believes Brisbane needs the cost of living allowance back to ensure they can stay competitive.

The cost of living allowance was taken away from Sydney and Brisbane after the Swans lured Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett to their club.

Black was quizzed about the future of Lions on Triple M's coverage, and pointed to the salary cap assistance that was taken away from the Lions.

"The club's made a lot of blues themselves, there's no question of that," he said.

"Probably the salary cap one - (if they) probably had the concession back (it) would be a good thing, I believe, to allow that again to retain players."

The Lions have lost young stars such as Elliot Yeo, who leads the AFLCA votes after round eight, Sam Docherty, who won Carlton's best and fairest last year, as well as James Aish, Jared Polec and Billy Longer.

They are also dealing with speculation around the future of young forward Josh Schache.

Black suggested the club needs a helping hand, especially given their form in recent years.

"Retention's a big issue up here," Black said.

"Particularly if the club's non-competitive like they have been in recent years."
