St Kilda chief executive Matt Finnis has defended criticism of Paddy McCartin, saying he is doing exactly what coach Alan Richardson would ask of him.

McCartin has struggled to cement his place in St Kilda's side, but did kick seven goals for Sandringham in the VFL last week.

Finnis said on the Friday Huddle McCartin's current form was more a positive than a negative.

"Yeah, I think it's more a positive at the moment than anything," he said on Triple M.

'The fact that Paddy's kicked 10 goals in two weeks is exactly the kind of thing that 'Richo' wants him to do.

"There's a lot of speculation, but you know Paddy, he knows really well what Richo wants of him, and what Aaron Hamill, his forward coach, wants of him."

Finnis admitted it was hard to crack St Kilda's forward line at the moment.

McCartin is fighting for a spot among Josh Bruce, Tim Membrey and Nick Riewoldt.

"We hope he kicks another bag tomorrow and keeps pushing his case," Finnis said.

"At the end of the day we were really happy with the way that our forward line operated last week.

"It's always going to be hard to force your way into a team that's won by 75 points, no matter how many goals he kicked."
