St Kilda has had a conversation with delisted Sydney defender Michael Talia.

Talia was cut by the Swans after two years on their list, playing just one game, and spent time at the Western Bulldogs before that.

St Kilda chief operating officer Ameet Bains confirmed that the club had spoken to him about potentially bringing him over.

He said Talia could help bolster their thin backline.

"We've got Nathan Brown and Jake Carlisle who both played the entire season for us, but it's a little bit thin underneath that," he told AFL trade radio.

"We've been investigating different ways in which we can bolster our defensive stocks and Michael's back in Melbourne and keen to have a chat, so we did that."

Talia's career has come with some controversy so far, with the defender pleading guilty to a drug possession charge last year.

He was also cleared of any wrongdoing from an investigation suggesting he leaked Bulldogs club information from the Bulldogs to his brother, Adelaide's Daniel, before the two clubs met in an elimination final in 2015.
