Retiring St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt has told Triple M’s Rush Hour that the Brisbane Lions of the early part of this century were his most hated team to play against.

The Lions, of course, claimed a historic three-peat of premierships during that period (between 2001-03) and were widely regarded as one of the best teams of all time.

“I had come from up there and they were just so good and they would terrorise us,” Riewoldt said.

“Martin Pike and the Scott boys, they’d really go the good verbal stuff.”

Riewoldt was famously targeted by Mal Michael and Chris Scott in the opening round of the 2005 season when he badly injured his right shoulder at the Gabba.

But the former Saints skipper insisted he never held a grudge as a result of that controversial incident.

“I went away with Mal Michael the year before to Ireland and got along really well with Mal and he’s a good fella,” Riewoldt said.

“But they were just ruthless and that’s why they were the kings.”
