St Kilda veteran Sam Gilbert was sidelined in the last quarter with a serious hand injury.

Gilbert appeared to have his right hand stomped on early in the last term.

Triple M boundary rider Neroli Meadows saw him receiving treatment on the bench.

“It looks like Sam Gilbert’s day is officially done," she said.

Dr Rohan White took a closer look, and spotted the nasty extent of Gilbert's injury.

"We're just having a closer look, he's got a splint on that, (it's) heavily bandaged," he said.

"It's what we call an open fracture: the bone was actually coming through the skin on the palm of his hand.

"That could be several weeks for Gilbert."
