St Kilda veteran Sam Gilbert has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal.

He will run out for the Saints once again in 2018, in what will be his 13th season in the AFL.

The 31-year-old, who is missing St Kilda's final home and away game on Sunday with an abdominal injury, told St Kilda's website on Sunday he was "really excited" to look forward to next season.

“I’m really excited about what we can accomplish as a group moving forward,” Gilbert said.

“We’re disappointed not to be in a better position heading into the final round of the season, but the development of individuals this season will hold us in good stead for next year.

“I’ve enjoyed my role this season, playing up around the ball in the ruck, and also being part of a pretty stable defensive group.”

St Kilda chief operating officer Ameet Bains praised Gilbert's contribution to the club.

“'Gilbo' is a really integral member of our playing group and offers so much on and off-the field,” he said.

“He has been a great ambassador for the St Kilda Football Club and continues to play strong football.

“His work in the ruck this year exemplifies his flexibility - he's always happy to do what is needed for the team.”
