St Kilda youngster Bailey Rice is set to miss the start of the footy season.

Rice is reportedly sidelined with a broken finger, an injury sustained in last week's JLT Series win over Carlton.

AFL.com.au reported Richardson told Saints fans the news at their club's season launch on Friday.

"Unfortunately 'Ricey' broke his finger in the game, so he'll miss a month of footy," he said.

It was Rice's first game for St Kilda in any format, after playing 16 VFL games for Sandringham last season.

The 20-year-old was eligible to be drafted as a father-son selection by both St Kilda and Carlton in 2015, after his father Dean played over 100 games for both clubs.
