St Kilda chief executive Matt Finnis has flattened rumours around Nat Fyfe, saying he hasn't spoken to him.

Rumours have linked Fyfe to St Kilda this week, with the Fremantle skipper out of contract and a restricted free agent at the end of the year.

Finnis joined the Friday Huddle, saying he hadn't had the conversation with Fyfe.

"No, I haven't had a chat with Nat since the player's association years ago," he said on Triple M.

"I think you've got to respect (the fact) these people are captains of footy clubs."

"I wouldn't expect that you're going to be meeting with a captain of a footy club at this time of year."

Finnis said he gets involved in discussions to recruit players, citing Jack Steele's recruitment last year.

"Even with Jack Steele coming in last year, I remember sitting down with Jack and our people and you pitch the club and our vision for the organisation," he said.

"I think they want to know where the club's going and it's my job to represent that vision.

"You inevitably get pretty involved in that.
