One of the AFL's most exciting players, Steve Johnson has today announced his retirement from the AFL at season's end.

The three-time Geelong premiership player held a press conference this morning to announce he would be leaving the game when his current side, the GWS Giants' season is up.

The much loved 'Stevie J' has had a stellar career, named an All Australian three times (2007, 2008, 2010), leading Geelong's goal kicking twice (2008, 2010) and claiming the Norm Smith Medal in Geelong's 2007 premiership victory over Port Adelaide.

"I figured people were going to start looking my way so I wanted to clarify that this is my last year," Johnson told the waiting media press.

"At the end of last year I decided to push and play one more. I feel content knowing I leave the game with nothing in the tank.

"It's pretty clear that the body has been battling this season. It's been a bit of a grind."

Johnson revealed that now his retirement announcement is out of the way, he and his Giants teammates can focus solely on winning the club's inaugural premiership.

"For me it's about getting it out of the way as it's an important period coming up for this footy club," Johnson revealed.

"I'd love nothing more than to finish off with a few goals in a Grand Final."
