Triple M's Mark Stevens in tonights match-preview says that he believes Essendon veteran Brent Stanton's AFL career is as good as finished.

After being omitted from the Bombers senior side when team selection was announced tonight, Stevo believes that Stanton's days as a senior footballer are numbered particularly after a poor performance last week against GWS.

“He looked a little bit off the pace last week I thought," Stevens said.

“It’s gonna be difficult for him to get back in, (he is) just about cooked now Stanton at Essendon.

“I think at some stage they need to start playing some kids and having a look at them."

Being dropped this week will be the third time in the first twelve rounds of the 2017 season Stanton has been omitted.

Stevens thinks that although he has been a proven performer over a long time, Stanton's time is up.

“They’ve (Essendon) been very good for Stants’, he’s been very good for them," he said.

“But it sort of comes to an end for everybody, boys, and it's coming pretty quickly for Stanton."

Stanton has played 255 games for Essendon since debuting in 2004.
