Sydney has delisted Alex Johnson, as well as rookie Sam Fisher.

The Swans announced Johnson would be cut from the senior list on Tuesday ahead of the first list lodgement, but may give him a second chance via the rookie list.

The 2012 premiership defender may be rookied pending another medical and conditioning assessment prior to the rookie list, and depending on their list.

Sydney's general manager of football Tom Harley praised Johnson in the meantime.

“Alex is an extremely popular and respected member of the playing group, and he has worked incredibly hard to get back to where he is,” he told the club's website.

“While we know Alex is disappointed, he understands the decision and remains driven to play AFL football.

“We will reassess Alex and our list after the AFL National Draft, however in the interim Alex will continue to train with the team.”

Johnson made his return to footy this season after five knee reconstructions, playing his first game in 1736 days in the NEAFL.

Fisher, a category B rookie, was also delisted, with the Swans saying he may be re-rookied.
