The AFL broke the all time overall single round attendance record today, racking up 400,000 spectators for the first time ever — just.

The AFL needed around 6,000 to rock up to the Freo v Cats game at Domain Stadium to break the old record of 371,212 and ended up getting more than 35,000.

The new record stands at 400,401.

The bumper figures come on the back of huge attendances for MCG blockbusters — 73,137 at Carlton v Richmond on Thursday night, 66,254 at Collingwood v Western Bulldogs and 78,294 at Essendon v Hawthorn.

The Bombers v Hawks figure is the highest for a home/away game between the two teams.

Round two kicks off on Thursday with Richmond taking on Collingwood in another massive game at the G.
