Retiring Hawk Josh Gibson was set to attend Hawthorn's best and fairest on Saturday night, his last as a player.

But he couldn't make it for one strange reason.

Alastair Clarkson revealed during his coaches address that Gibson had copped one last injury, tearing his adductor muscle while riding a horse that morning.

"He's not here tonight, by the way, which is a bit disappointing," he said.

"He's riding a horse this morning and he's ripped an adductor off the bone, would you believe!

"So he's got a bit of swelling around the nether region, which is a little bit uncomfortable! So he hasn't been able to attend tonight, which is unfortunate.

"But we'll get another opportunity, hopefully, to acknowledge 'Gibbo' and the wonderful contribution he made to our footy club."
