No Excuses

Triple M Footy’s Jay Clark joined the Winter Breakfast this morning to discuss his Herald Sun colleague Jon Ralph’s article on the coaching tenure of Nathan Buckley.

Ralph wrote this morning that Buckley should start polishing his CV in preparation for a new job come the end of the season, and that Collingwood should start assessing other potential candidates.

Ralph revealed that Collingwood’s top 10 players from the 2016 best-and-fairest have only missed a total of three games with injury this year.

Of the top six players in the count, they have played every game bar Adam Treloar’s single absence in Round 8 – a stat that Clark says highlights the depth of the hole Buckley and Collingwood finds itself in.

“In the Pies defence, you’ve got to say that Jamie Elliot, who didn’t play at all last year, has been missing,” Clark said, “and I think Travis Varcoe’s speed is very important.”

“But you look at the recruits, and the list management had been a talking point, Chris Mayne can’t get a game and Daniel Wells has had two calf setbacks.

“That recruiting of the crème on the cake so to speak, hasn’t really happened this year either.”

But Clark said it was the lack of foot skills from the Pies’ so called ‘elite’ midfield that was ultimately letting them down.

“(Adam) Treloar and Taylor Adams…who was having really good season up until that Melbourne game, have butchered the footy in recent weeks.

“When you look at that top 10 best and fairest players all playing this season, you have to think that Bucks hasn’t got a lot of excuses.”
