UPDATE: Carlton have told the AFL that they would like to be involved in the 2018 pre-season draft, less than two hours before it was scheduled to take place.

The AFL originally communicated to the public on Monday afternoon that, for the third year in a row, there would be no AFL pre-season draft and that the rookie draft would once again take all of the attention from 5pm.

But, after a two-year hiatus, the pre-season draft has been saved with the Blues intending to use one pick.

The last time a pre-season draft took place was three years ago when Carlton picked up former Western Bulldog Jason Tutt with the second and only pick.

A year earlier, GWS used the only pick in the 2014 pre-season draft to select former Swan Jed Lamb, who ended up at Carlton.

At it's height, 81 players were picked up in the pre-season draft back in 1993.
