North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein has declared his confusion at last night's third man up controversy, saying players "don't quite have a firm grasp" of the rule.

Goldstein was at the centre of the controversy, thinking he was competing with Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli before the free was paid to the nominated ruckman, Josh Dunkley.

He joined Triple M favourite Neroli Meadows on Fox Sports' Game Day show.

"That was a pretty confusing couple of minutes," he said.

"When someone nominates and the umpire's obviously saw that one and called it, and Bontempelli's also put his hand up...it's one of those bits of the rule that we don't quite have a firm grasp of, and we've never seen anything like that happen."

Goldstein offered a solution to the whole dilemma.

"If someone's standing there in the ruck contest next to me and they're nominating, they should be the ruckman," he said.

"I think Dunkley, who's apparently the one who was the ruckman, was nowhere near me.

"It makes it every confusing and it's definitely something that needs to be looked at."
