New Port Adelaide midfielder Tom Rockliff spoke about his move to the Power after Brsbane elected not to match his new contract today.

Speaking on Triple M Adelaide’s Rush Hour with Sam Jacobs and Rhett Biglands, Rockliff said that a personal post-season visit from Port captain Travis Boak was a big factor in him getting to Alberton.

“It was probably Ken Hinkley and Travis Boak that were the key factors and the key drivers for me [getting to Port Adelaide,” Rockliff said.

“I spoke to Ken a fair bit throughout the process, he was really buoyant about where Port Adelaide Football Club is at the moment and the direction it’s heading in… I actually went to Ken’s house and had a couple of waters and a conversation with him and Boaky made the trip up here post-season to say g’day.

“There was no wining and dining, as I said it just came down to being the best decision for me.”

Rocklif said the final decision on whether to accept the offer from Port or one from Carlton was a difficult one.

“It was a tough decision obviously [between] all three clubs, whether we stayed in Brisbane, or [went] to Adelaide or went to Carlton, back to Melbourne,” he said.

“We just worked through it, me and my partner Sharna obviously got a newborn who’s only three and a half weeks old, Jack.

“We just settled on Adelaide in the end… obviously there was the lure to go back to Victoria but in saying that I’d still be two hours from home, all my family’s still back in Benalla… the go home factor didn’t really affect me too much.”

Rockliff said he’s looking forward to playing footy in a state where the sport has a profile.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to a footy state,” he said.

“When you grow up in that as a young bloke you just live and breathe AFL through the winter months and the cricket trough the summer months, so the opportunity to go to a football state, have that microscope on you, I’m really looking forward to the challenge that provides.”

Rockliff said he’ll be a “bit naive” to the intense pressure of a Showdown.

“”Obviously the whole town and city will be abuzz and I really look forward to that,” he said.

“Obviously the Q Clash, we try and build it up in Queensland, but unfortunately it’s not where it needs to be.”
