'It’s obviously a huge shock'

Former Adelaide Crow Tyson Edwards is in a position where he can understand what Robbie Gray is going through after the Port man’s testicular cancer diagnosis.

Edwards dealt with the same affliction during his career, and joined Rhett Biglands and Sam Jacobs on Adelaide’s Rush Hour on Triple M today to discuss what he went through and what Gray can expect.

“It’s obviously a huge shock to start with, so that’s probably the thing Robbie would have tried to get over to start with is getting told he’s got cancer,” Edwards said.

“So you’re dealing with that mentally, and obviously he’s just about to start a young family as well, so that adds another dimension to the whole thing.”

Edwards said the natural first thought after a diagnosis of cancer is mortality.

“The first thing I think you think about is ‘I could die’,” he said.

“Then you work through it all and work out the best procedure and scenario for you… it is certainly a shock, something you don’t expect, but it happens.”

Edwards said that being young and fit makes no difference with cancer.

“What I was told when I was going through it was that it’s more of a teenage boy to up and around mid 30s age bracket, that’s sort of it where it hits most.”

“So it’s important for young boys out there to understand that if you notice any change or anything to get it looked at straight away, but that’s sort of the age bracket it hits most.

“In my case I didn’t feel any pain or sick or anything, just noticed a change in size in one of the old boys downstairs.”
