In a refreshing and almost-unprecedented move, an AFL umpire has publicly taken the blame for a contentious decision over the weekend.
Former player Jordan Bannister fronted up to critics on Twitter who questioned a free kick he gave in the match between Hawthorn and Melbourne.
Hawks debutant Kade Stewart appeared to duck into Demons player James Harmes - consequently drawing high contact and a free right in front of goal.
Bannister since admitted the call was an error:
Thumbs up! Would love to see more of it coming out of the umpires camp in the future.
At the end of the day, they're trying to officiate the most difficult game in the world... Everyone makes mistakes.
