North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey has admitted he got it wrong when assessing whether or not Kangaroos ruckman Majak Daw and Collingwood forward Mason Cox would be able to forge AFL careers for themselves.

Carey initially didn’t give the pair much hope of making a meaningful impact on the footy scene.

But based on what he has seen of them this year, he has had a change of mind.

In fact, the dual premiership Kangaroos captain believes Daw should leave Arden Street in a bid to further his career.

“This year he has shown that he can play at the highest level, I think he has improved his fitness base. He basically couldn’t run out a quarter,” Carey said of Daw on Triple M’s Winter Breakfast on Monday.

“He probably has to leave the Kangaroos, I believe, because he’s just not going to get the opportunities there with (Todd) Goldstein (in the way).

“If he leaves the Kangaroos, he will get an opportunity somewhere else and I think that I’ll be eating my words.”

Carey has also been taken aback by the footy smarts that Texas native Cox is displaying in just his second year on the Magpies’ list.

“I said, ‘If he plays a game, I’ll go he’ ... Our sport must be real easy because he is a bloke that has never played the game before,” Carey joked.

“He competes so he never gets out-marked and he can mark the ball, so he’s ahead of most ruckmen for starters.

“And he kicks the ball really well, he’s not a long kick, he’s not a great field kick, but when he gets the ball 30-35 metres out, he’s a deadeye dick.

“He’s got a career ahead of him and ... he showed when he went into the ruck that he has a good understanding, he has soft hands, has a good understanding of how to hit the ball to the advantage of a team without taking possession.”

The big American has been a revelation for Collingwood in his debut season, booting 15 goals from nine matches to be second on the Pies’ goalkicking list.
