Wayne Carey has said, of all the teams yet to record a win this season, Sydney is the team most capable of fighting back into contention this year.

Sydney, as well as Hawthorn and North Melbourne, are all winless from their first three games this season.

All three teams have slumped after making finals last year.

Seeing all three slide has taken Carey by surprise.

"Who would have thought? Even the Kangaroos, even though they've had a bit of a turnover, still, they're three teams you didn't expect to be there," he said on Triple M's Rush Hour with Jars and Louie.

"It is only round three."

Carey backed Sydney as the side capable of turning things around.

"I will say that out of those, you suspect that Sydney are a team that can get on a roll and win ten in a row during the year," he said.

"So I'm not as concerned about them as I am the other two."

After a period of sustained success, Carey was surprised at how far Hawthorn have slipped.

"It is (a big fall), and well, we saw it happen to Fremantle (last year)," he said.

"I don't think that Hawthorn are as bad as that.

"I guess it was the fashion that Hawthorn got beaten in...Gold Coast the week before was just insipid.

"It's just un-Hawthorn-like. We just haven't seen it for so long."
