Wayne Carey says the contact below the knees rule is “disgraceful” after Melbourne were on the receiving end of a couple of of controversial calls in their semi-final against Hawthorn last night.

Speaking on the Saturday Rub, Duck said that the rule could potentially have cost Melbourne in their semi-final against Hawthorn last night.

“You’ve got (AFL head of football operations Steve) Hocking coming out and saying it might be this change and that change next week and yet we have a disgraceful rule like that last night,” Duck said.

“It could have nearly, nearly… if (Jack) Gunston kicks that goal (to cut the margin to nine points in the third quarter) Hawthorn were on a roll, it could have accept the apple cart.

“It was that fine a line. Two big decisions in crucial moments, and they were disgraceful decisions.”

Duck rejected suggestions the umpires’ calls were correct under the current interpretation.

“A player who’s already on the ground is not allowed to then go back and get the footy and if someone kicks him or knees him in the head it’s contact below the knees?” Duck said.

“It is disgraceful!”
