Wayne Carey has told The Rub today about the brief time he spent in defence in 1998.

He was recovering from shoulder surgery and coach Denis Pagan shifted the star forward to defence for the start of the season.

LISTEN:

"I came off a shoulder reconstruction (in) '97, and he thought he wanted to make the defence stronger, so he thought he'd play me at centre half back," The Duck told the boys.

"First 3 or 4 games I played at centre half back, and we were out here on the MCG against Fremantle and they weren't going so well.

"And they were beating us, so he (Pagan) moved me back to centre half forward and 7 (goals) later we won the game.

"He (Pagan) came up to me after the game and said 'Son, if I ever play you at centre half back again punch me fair in the mouth'.

Fair to say he never played down back much ever again!
