West Coast is optimistic that star spearhead Josh Kennedy will be fit for round one after undergoing ankle surgery at the end of last year.

Kennedy had an operation after experiencing discomfort in his ankle shortly after resuming pre-season training.

The two-time Coleman Medalist isn’t expected to feature in any of the Eagles’ pre-season matches but he remains on track for their round one encounter with Sydney at the new Optus Stadium.

“Josh is progressing well. He’s out of the boot and is ticking boxes in his recovery. Our goal is round one,” assistant coach Jaymie Graham said on Monday.

Despite missing five games due to a calf injury in 2017, Kennedy (69) fell just four goals short of his third Coleman Medal.

The former Blue looks set to become the Eagles’ all-time leading goalkicker early this season.

He has kicked 508 goals for West Coast since joining them in 2008, after 22 games and 11 goals with Carlton, and needs just another seven goals to overtake the Eagles’ current greatest goalscorer Peter Sumich (514).
