West Coast utility Sharrod Wellingham has not yet been offered a contract for next season, with manager Colin Young admitting he is one of many players "treading water" during the trade period.

The 29-year-old found himself in and out of the side during the year, playing the first nine games at AFL level before succumbing to an ankle injury.

He failed to reclaim his spot after that, spending most of the back end of the year in the WAFL and playing just four more AFL games for the season.

Young told AFL Trade Radio on Friday that Wellingham was in a tricky spot with the ambiguity around his future.

"No, he's been advised that, probably about 100 other players, he has to tread water during the trade period," he said.

"It's not a great time at the moment for six to 12 players at every club where they're just sitting there treading water to see what happens through the (trade) period.

"Clubs are a little bit greedy at this time of year, and that's just the nature of the beast."
